So Alice, her mother, and I went out doing various important things. While we were out, though, we took a break to run into the nearest thrift store and rummage through the used books. $.99 for a hardcover book, $.39 for paperback. How could we not?

In the stacks of mostly romance novels, we eventually bought

  • The Hot Zone, hardcover, because Alice is obsessed with ebola

  • The First Wives Club, hardcover, because Alice likes the sex scenes

  • Some pop psychology book, written off as Alice doing research

  • Bech: A Book, because I wanted something for myself, damn it

  • A Buffy the Vampire Slayer book, because Alice is a geek

  • The World According to Garp, for Alice's mother

  • The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, because historical fanfiction about famous coked-up detectives is terribly amusing

  • Hunt for Red October and Executive Orders, for Alice's father, the Clancy addict


  • and several shirts. I'd like to go to an actual used bookstore once the paycheck comes in. Alice once found The Road to Hel...
